The original of the top image is captioned: "M.W. Jory Wagon Shop/(Now site of Elinor's)/528 E. Third St." It is undated. It probably pre-dates 1899, since I started reading the Hobart papers in 1899 and I don't remember any mention of the wagon shop being in existence then (although I wasn't looking for it). I may come up with better info when I do the Time Warp.

Thank goodness the caption includes the address, since Elinor's has likewise passed into memory. And some helpful person wrote "526" over the building on the far left.

M.W. Jory was the guy who gave Hobart's Joryville neighborhood its name.

More Jory stuff to come.

If you look closely at the window of the house on the right there is a woman standing looking out--maybe Mrs. Jory?

I hadn't noticed that before! There certainly does seem to be a woman there. I have no clue whose house that was. Matthew Jory had a house on south Linda Street, but I don't know when it was built or when he lived there. And then there were the Jory children, who would have wanted their own homes when they grew up and got married...

i grew up on garfield street in hobart and our back yard was diagonally across the alley from the backyard of this house. The Woods family lived there then and their kids always insisted that the house was haunted!

I love a haunted house! So the original house was still standing then? (We're talking about Linda Street, right?)

Yes,the 800 block of south Linda Street. It would have been the second house from the north corner on the west side of the street. I believe that the house was torn down sometime in the early 1990's. A one-story house was built on the property. Wonder if the ghosts left??

The houses in that neighborhood are so cool. I looked at a house in that neighborhood and the rooms were very dark and narrow (fitting of the period it was built in) and it had an old clawfoot tub. The whole house gave a old, eerie vibe.
