Wild Mushrooms of Ainsworth: Black Morel
Found in mid-October by my own front steps.
The growing season of the Black Morel is April through May, so they are not authorized to grow in October. Evidently this guy is a rebel who plays by his own rules. [Update: Totally wrong! This is a stinkhorn!]

I'm not sure it's even a morel... this looks like it might be a variety of common stinkhorn that resembles morels, so be careful, it could be poisonous.
In view of its slimy, disgusting appearance, stinkhorn sounds likely! :) And don't worry, I would never dream of eating any of these mushrooms I "identify."
