Against the Grain

By the late summer of 1915, William Raschka had finished his "much-needed rest" and was again hard at work buying and selling grain, and complaining about its quality:

I don't think William and Carrie ever came back to Ainsworth, but as far as I'm concerned they are Ainsworthites forever, so, yes, I'm going to report on trivial stuff like this.

When their daughter Daisy comes in eighth out of some 50 girls competing in a town popularity contest, I'm going to report on that, too. (This little exercise in cruelty was sponsored by the Phillips & Byall drugstore. Lola Wischman won first place. The 12 contestants with the most votes received as prizes Kodak cameras of varying worth, awarded by Judge Killigrew in a little ceremony at the drugstore.)

And when the Raschkas' daughter Leona is one of 12 guests invited to Erna Piornak's 12th birthday — another little guest being Dahlia Messick — I'm even going to mention that.
