Merrillville Then and Now: Lincoln Highway near Broadway

Circa 1930 (roughly) and 2010 …

First we have the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Broadway, or so the caption on the photo says, but I never would have guessed; it's so different. I'm told that Broadway really did not extend south of the Lincoln Highway at that time.

The circa-1930s images are courtesy of the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Society.

Then we have this photo, taken a short distance west of the first. The photographer stood just west of Madison Street, facing east. At least, that's the best I've been able to figure out.

What is the source of the old photographs? Are these postcards?

I don't think these were postcards -- I don't remember seeing anything on the back (but it's been six weeks since I scanned them and I can hardly remember yesterday). The originals are in one of the photo binders on exhibit at the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Society Museum.

73rd Ave & Bdwy in the first set of photos. Yes, Bdwy did not go further than 73rd way back in the day. Isn't that the train tracks/station on Bdwy to the right in the older photo? (which is now completely gone, and turned into a bike path I think)
The second set is also 73rd Ave just west of Madison, you are correct. First photo is just about to go up the hill on 73rd in the foreground. Second photo shows the Speedway gas station at the intersection of 73rd & Madison, to the left of center.

73rd Avenue is now called Old Lincoln Highway - it was part of the original Lincoln Hwy from 1913-14 until 1928, when US 30 was fully developed across the country and is often called Lincoln Highway, because it aligned with the LH route in many states.
