The Nolte brothers' former housekeeper, Sarah Read, was ill. The woman she was staying with, "Mrs. E. Hartnup," was likely Eliza Hartnup, widow of Edgar, whose maiden name seems to have been Read (or Reed — they keep changing the spelling).

I had to google Tanlac...seems it was recommended for just about any and all ailments...high concentration of alcohol...something like 17%! One current analysis of the contents was wine mixed with blackberry flavoring. I like these peeks into old remedies!
