I had no hint that Marion Mackey was not the biological daughter of Dwight and Ruth Mackey. To the census-taker, in January 1920, they simply called her their daughter. But after the little girl died on April 1, 1920, both local newspapers thought it worth mentioning that she had been adopted. For example, from the Gazette:
